Das Phänomen Komplementärmedizin: Verwilderung oder Bereicherung ärztlichen Handelns?
Although patients are surprisingly aware of mainstream versus complementary medical approaches and know when to use which, a constructive dialogue between representatives from both sides is still lacking due to common prejudices among doctors of either persuasion. We need to recognize that epistemological perspectives are always relative, i.e. that there is no single true perspective. If we acknowledge such a relativistic position, an holistic view of the person demands a willingness to switch perspectives and take up different points of view. This creates a chance to clarify the potential and limits, of either approach as well as how both complement each other. Within mainstream medicine, the dominant paradigm is deterministic and pathology oriented, while many complementary approaches are salutogenetic and oriented towards patient autonomy at different levels. The challenge facing us is to develop the current haphazard pluralism into a rational plurality of different medical vantage points that truly complement one another within medicine as a comprehensive meaningful undertaking.
