There is an influential tendency to reduce personal experience to neuronal processes. Experiences like self and personhood, which apparently do not fit this scheme, are explained as mere illusions. The consequences of this naturalistic reduction for our self-understanding and for the ethical foundation of our actions are serious. However, neither the naturalistic reduction nor neuroethics can be justified philosophically. The findings of neuroscience can well be reconciled with our self- and world-experience although some corrections and adaptations will be required.
