Neuroscientific research demonstrates the brains malleability and suggests means for self-shaping. These new avenues of personal development lead to an increase in autonomy. We are more responsible for who we are, how we feel and act. The option-space is double-edged: An increase in autonomy is valuable but also a burden that is complicit with more options. More capacity for self-determination implies responsibility. This can overwhelm individuals and lead to disorientation. To exploit the potential promised by plasticity, an increase in knowledge of the phenomenon must be accompanied by an advancement of the competence for self-determination to allow a beneficial handling.
