The relationship between physician, patient and public is characterised by diverse interactions and dependencies. This article is divided into the relationship between patient and public (represented by the media) and physician and public. The author regards the necessary reduction and selection in the process of providing information through the media as a danger to the physician-patient-relationship: the patients may develop expectations that cannot be fulfilled. The physician, however, is not just a recipient vis-à-vis the public (the media) but also a provider of information (an expert). There is a risk of misrepresentation caused by a crisis of expert system. The article concludes that the relationship between physician, patient and public can function only if it is characterised by trust.
